What is GNSS?
GNSS or Global Navigation Satellite System is a combination of all existing satellite navigation systems - GPS, GLONASS, WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS. The last three are only additional to a system, as they are satellites located in geostationary orbit and ensure corrections for significantly lower accuracy.
Simultaneous tracking of signals from both GPS and GLONASS increases the number of observed satellites, which amplify the practical ability to obtain better results in real-time kinematic when poor conditions exist (forest and mountainous terrain, urban areas, etc).
When the number of observed satellites is higher, there is always enough data to solve the ambiguity to determine location.
At present constellations of GPS and GLONASS consist of respectively 32 and 24 satellites and their number is about to increase in the near future. The quality of GNSS will enhance when the European Galileo and Chinese Compass projects are put into operation as well.
